Institute of Engineering [Research Institution]

Introducing Institute of Engineering [Research Organization].

Message from the Dean

Institute of Engineering at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology was formerly the Graduate School of Symbiotic Science and Technology, a research organization established when the university became a national university corporatization institution in 2004. Since being reorganized as the Institute of Engineering at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology in 2010, the institution has promoted "creative research based on free thinking, with a focus on education and research in the interdisciplinary fields of engineering and other academic fields, while keeping in mind academic developments and societal demands."

The mission of our Institute of Engineering is to "create new knowledge that will change the world." In order to create new knowledge that will change the world, it is important for researchers to conduct independent research with originality. At Institute of Engineering, we prioritize supporting these researchers and creating a system that will enable better research. Traditionally, we have strong ties with the industrial world and are actively engaged in joint research with companies. We aim to implement new discoveries and new technologies born from university research in society and contribute to society.

In order to achieve the mission mentioned above, Institute of Engineering not only aims to enhance the expertise of each individual, but also to introduce and support a system that supports interdisciplinary research involving other fields of expertise. I believe that the best way to comprehensively understand and find solutions to the various problems occurring in modern society is to respect diversity. I believe that diversity in research should be respected, in addition to the commonly discussed diversity of gender, race, and nationality. From basic to applied research, I would like researchers from a wide range of fields to work together to pioneer new fields and show ways to solve various problems in society.

Nobufumi Nakamura, Dean of Institute of Engineering
